Introducing AMSAT Character Malts

AMSAT Character Malts is Australia’s oldest new malting facility. So, what do I mean by that? While we are launching a brand-new craft malting business, we were malting barley decades ago...

Here is a brief intro to who we are and what we do. And, to read about our history in malt, click here.

Why Craft Malting?

We saw the lack of availability of local craft and specialty malt. Many craft breweries and distilleries are using similar, mass-produced malts. We feel we can offer something unique and of value. Craft malt for craft breweries and distilleries.

As for specialty malts, a large percentage of specialty malts used come from overseas. Great products, for sure. However, we would rather see great Australian specialty malts in our beer and whiskies. And we think the industry would prefer this too.

Our equipment is perfectly suited to producing malt and specialty malts. Furthermore, we have the history, IP, and capacity to maximise this equipment and serve the craft industry.

Why Character Malts?

Let’s be honest; without many millions of dollars, it’s hard to compete with the giant malt houses of the world. And we don’t want to either. We want to produce malt that speaks of its provenance. Malt with terroir. Malt that offers breweries and distilleries a point of difference. Malt with Character.

So, how will our malts have character?

·       We are focussing on floor malting. A process steeped in tradition (and in lower back pain). A manual process that allows the closest connection between the maltster and the grain. A process that allows for an aromatic and characterful malt.

·       We will be producing malt with provenance. Barley grown in the Adelaide Hills by our good mate Richard.

·       We will be producing roasted and crystal malts. An art that is right in our wheelhouse.
